OpenAI funding round: what changed
Earlier this month, OpenAI was reported to be trying to raise about $30 billion at a company value above $1.4 trillion.
Friday was the deadline for investors to commit. The first part of the money is expected to be less than $20 billion, because some investors lowered the amount they will give.
Another report says about $11 billion has been promised so far. OpenAI plans to ask family offices and wealthy people for more in the coming weeks.
Who is investing in the OpenAI funding round
A group of UAE investors, including the state-backed fund MGX, is expected to give the most. In return, OpenAI would get the option to rent new computing capacity in the region.
Founders Fund, Coatue, Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz are also expected to join. SoftBank is said to be joining too.
Wealthy people will be able to invest later, at the same $1.25 trillion value.
Why tech stocks and Anthropic’s IPO matter here
US tech stocks have been falling on worries about huge spending on AI. The Nasdaq dropped 2.9% on Friday and is 7.8% below its record high from October 6.
OpenAI wants to go public in 2027. It wants to finish this round before Anthropic goes public, because both companies are asking the same investors for money. Anthropic filed for its Nasdaq listing on October 26.
OpenAI valuation: how $1.25 trillion compares
In March, OpenAI raised $122 billion at a company value of $852 billion. The new $1.25 trillion value is about 47% higher than that. It is $150 billion lower, or about 11%, than the $1.4 trillion OpenAI first asked for.
The bull case:
Large backers are still taking part, including a UAE group, SoftBank and several top venture firms.
OpenAI told investors its yearly revenue pace was about $50 billion at the end of September and could reach $70 billion or more by the end of 2026. qz
The UAE deal brings computing capacity, not just cash.
A strong Anthropic listing could lift investor interest across the sector.
The bear case:
Only about $11 billion is promised so far, against the original $30 billion goal. investing
Tech stocks are still falling on worries about AI spending.
OpenAI and Anthropic are asking the same investors for money at nearly the same time.
Spending needs this large mean OpenAI has to keep raising big rounds.
OpenAI’s round is smaller and priced lower than first planned, but it is still moving ahead with big backers. How much it raises in the end, and how investors react to Anthropic’s listing, will show how much appetite is left to back AI at these prices. The final terms are not announced yet.
